  • Musical expert — Key has been playing the lute since he was five years old and the recorder since he was twenty-five. Moreover, he has a natural talent for music. Raw ability combined with years of practice and an uncanny ear for the craft mean his playing expert-level. There aren't many things he's really, truly good at, but in terms of music he is top-notch. It takes a lot to make him drop a note or play a sour chord, and he has a signature playing style with the lute in which he plays both melody and harmony together so rapidly that it seems two instruments are playing.
    
  • Mood Music — Key's music can either have a motivating and enlivening effect or a soporific, sleep-inducing effect, though the extent of this is always left up to the other players. Yet he has several times been able to calm raging beasts, lulling them to sleep with the sweet strains from his strings. It's not truly magic, but it might feel like it sometimes.
    
  • Spontaneous Courage/Inspiration — Key is, generally speaking, a coward. He knows he's not a fighter; he's known he's not a fighter since he was very young. He doesn't shrink from every last thing, but if a fight breaks out, he is likely to make every effort to stay out of the fray. However, every now and again something snaps within him, and he will experience a completely unexpected and uncharacteristic burst of daring. It's usually short-lived, and since he has absolutely zero combat training, it's not likely to be very effective, but surprises happen every day.
    
  • Sharp wit — Key has the mind of a poet; he is quick-witted, keen in biting satire, and quick-thinking. Expect cunning conversations and wordplay worthy of Shakespeare (Shakespurr?).
    
  • Master of the [Uni]Verse — It must be said again that Key is very adept at poetry, often composing verse on the fly. He is also prone to break spontaneously into iambic pentameter when he is angry or flustered (though he usually catches himself eventually). Not one to challenge to a rap battle.
    
  • Fainting — He does it a lot.

  Due to a wish granted by a kitsune, Key's age and mortality is bound to Epitome's. He will not age so long as she doesn't age, and he won't die until she does. They thought this was a great idea at the time.
  
  What this means, though, is that, while he is not generally a combat character, direct attempts to kill him will fail. He can only be killed or have his soul separated from his body if Epitome is killed. Yet this doesn't stop him from being horribly, horribly injured and somehow surviving it all. Perhaps he'll learn in time that it wasn't the most brilliant of ideas. Still, it must be stated quite plainly that he is a coward, in combat situations, and will therefore shrink back from any fights, attempting to flee if possible. Even knowing he can't die, he still doesn't like pain. Some things never change.
